Wordlife’s party techno prowess is as commanding as it is diverse. Not too serious. Seriously fun.

SAFIA are my favourite thing causing a stir in Australian music at the moment. It looks like Canberra is catching up to the rest of the country/world in producing global standard talent. Our fair capital may even start setting the pace one day. SAFIA have been crafting some very danceable songs, all eclectic in their electronic appeal. Their latest single “Listen to Soul, Listen to Blues” has (for me) set a new benchmark for pop writing in an electronic context. A patient build with vocalist Ben Woolner-Kirkham’s falsetto gliding to high highs before swooping down into an onslaught of distortion, pulsing through stabs of syncopated excellence. Rarely can two lines of lyrics make a song feel so complete.
Triple J know what’s up, selecting SAFIA for Groovin’ The Moo Canberra 2013 via Triple J Unearthed, their track “Stretched & Faded” introducing their sonic intensity to the national airwaves. Give both tracks a listen below!

Lorde are just great. Their single “Royals” radiates a whimsical, heartwarming quality. The song reps this earnest distinction and power within the vocals and production allowing it to cleverly avoid being ‘twee’. Now apply a subtle tropical, rhythmic feel and you have the savvy remix of Canberra’s Magnifik. Yes, that will do just nicely.

Back Back Forward Punch are a duo from Melbourne. Laura Boland sings, and Andy Liddell produces. They are making sensual contemporary disco. Their new single “Don’t Stop Now” is an ultra smooth piece. Boland’s voice possesses grace and clarity, with a touch of vulnerability. As I am a big fan of Crazy P, I’m definitely feeling this. “Zero to Disco” pumps and breaths with 90s life. BBFP have got the soulful romantic groove down for sure. Solid music. I’d love to hear more – perhaps something slower with a little more bite.
