RECOMMENDED: Jesus & Hey Sam – Old School Tip (Mike Metro Remix)
I’ve been on a bit of a house music kick lately – and by house, I mean that sweet jackin, soulful, jazzy and techy stuff. I came across some house joints and booties by Melbourne dude Hey Sam, and discovered the Jump To This label that he runs. Literally a couple of days later a friend recommended a Melbourne-based producer to me – Mike Metro – so I checked out his cloud and, of course, he seems to run in a similar circle to Hey Sam, having remixed each other etcetc.
I was aware of an underground techno scene is Melbs, but what I became excited with was the house flavour that both Mike Metro and Hey Sam (and the Jump To This label) have incorporated into their sound – not a great deal of recent Australian producers are striving for this kind of genre. Metro reps the hallmark sub-bass groan, and you can tell that he would have been right at home remixing the likes of Monkey Safari, but it’s good to see some more left-field remixes on his cloud, including Dean Martin, Beach Boys and The Beatles. In my opinion a taste consciousness like this sets him apart from the usual techno-hippy producers, reflecting a more fun party-vibe, which has no doubt contributed to his #35 ranking in the Australian Inthemix awards 2011, and as one of Melbourne’s most in-demand djs.
Happy days – Mike Metro is coming to jam in my town at Trinity Bar, Canberra on Sunday October 2, which is over one of our many long-weekends here – which pretty much guarantees some brilliant social chaos!
