RECOMMENDED: Beni – House Of Beni LP
At the time that Modular posted up the stream for Beni’s highly anticipated “House of Beni” LP, I only had a chance to listen to the first and last tracks before parting with my laptop. Since then I’ve seen a heavy flow of positive feedback via twitter and facebook feed, which only managed to whet my appetite even more. I’ve now managed to give the album a good ear-whipping, and quite simply it’s a real treat! Here’s a few quick words on each track:
“Sway”
is a steamy 80s synth jam that could bring the town in Footloose to it’s knees.
“Last Night”
twists and turns through feverish verses in falsetto, a reflective monologue of sexual frustration perhaps.
“Your Body”
breaks things down to a cheek-to-cheek slow dance at a high school prom. A sensual r&b lament with finger snaps and the raw beating heart of soul.
“It’s A Bubble”
set everyone’s expectations as the lead single for the record. A dizzy, camp, saxed-up house groove that I hope has managed to inflect all of the younger dancefloor folk with a taste for house.
“Someone Just Like You”
amps up the attitude even more with an infectious George Michael-esque vocal and more bad-ass synth hooks.
“High Off Your Love”
conveys a pretty clear message…
“O.P.U.L.E.N.C.E”
is one of the more quirky numbers, a tech house groove taking shape beneath a manic loop of staccato piano chords. I’m getting an almost South American vibe from that percussion.
“Love Scene”
appears to be the return of “My Love Sees You” in zombie form. Nuff said.
“Yeah”
is the black sheep of the LP. Deep, moody tech house. Those bells and chimes are epic. Like Willy Wonka epic.
“Zig Zags”
is a twee as fuck lullaby, complete with what sounds like a finger piano. A strong swaying beat with hand claps and snare fills. This was the perfect end to such a diverse album, but it was still quite a surprise.
Beni has crafted a magnificent, well-rounded album. Advancing through the record, each track is like a brand new awakening for modern pop music, bundled together with Beni’s old-school arrangements and production savvy. Nomi, Mattie Safer, Sam Sparrow, Prince Terrence, Via Tania and Sean Delear fit perfectly into the equation. I’m so fucking impressed by this.
