INTERVIEW | Danny T
Interview by Luke Tkalcevic.
After a massive 2011, the Australian dance music scene is in agreement that Brisbane based Danny T will be one of our major house players in 2012. With tracks signed to Sweat It Out and One Love gaining a massive response locally and abroad, I asked Danny T about what shapes his sets and music, and his plans for this year.
PBJ: Though it has changed slightly in the past few years, how would you define the Danny T sound?
DT: It’s always evolving, but ive always vibed straight up house music, whether it jacks, swings, pumps or thumps! I’m into repetitive grooves that go nowhere haha. My latest productions have been a bit more party but still percussive as fuck with that proper jack… lets call it Horn House!
PBJ: This past year has been your biggest, with a heap of festivals, an ARIA #1 with “Whine Your Waistline”, and an EP on Sweat It Out. Has it been exciting watching your national profile grow substantially?
DT: Yeah the year gone has been amazing, chalked a few things off on the Danny T blackboard, gaining the coveted #1 spot with waistline really shocked me, i couldn’t believe what started as an underground party record would eventually tune into a club weapon. On the flip side, the EP with Sweat It Out cruised the underground circuit gaining props from the real house gangster purists so it was a good balance.
PBJ: What are your plans for 2012? You announced that you had a new track with Oh Snap! (the follow up to “Whine Your Waistline”) in the works.
DT: Yeah Snap and i have just finished the follow up to waistline and its sounding mega, it’s a booty shaking tribute to all things derriere. We’ve revisited what made the original so successful making it a bit more clubby but still with that raw party vibe… the lyrics are funny as hell and Oh Snap has really brought his A game on this one. The track will also feature exclusively on the Ministry Of Sound Clubbers Guide 2012 which I had the great honour of mixing alongside Denzal Park. There’s a 12 week tour in place from January until April so keep your eyes peeled when i roll in your city!
PBJ: Your Sweat It Out EP specifically seems to align you with a more ‘classic’ house sound, in the same vein as other Australian’s such as Jeremy Joshua and Toby Neal. Was there a conscious decision by you to head towards this sort of style?
DT: My intentions were to aim my sound at the house heads that ive come to admire over the years, theres a little influence from everyone in there…. growing up listening to derrick carter, jesse rose and carl craig to name a few, really helped mould my sound and i wanted to express that in an EP. Im a sucka for the 1930’s swing era so the EP heavily tributed many classic jazz cats! Jeremy and I regularly hit the studio together too, our joint love of house is undeniable and a match made in heaven when we lay down some fun in the studio.
PBJ: To finish up, what five house tracks are you vibing on right now?
DT:
1. Mark Fanciulli – The Tide
2. Solo – Pumperknickle
3. Analog People In A Digital World – Izkeka Neda (Zombie Disco Squad Mix)
4. Mankinde – The Gospel According To Jack
5. Eats Everything – The Size
